Krauthammer is one of the most insightful political columnist out there, and as usual, he nails it again.

By Charles Krauthammer

There’s no better path to success than getting people to buy a free commodity. Like the genius who figured out how to get people to pay for water: Bottle it (Aquafina was revealed to be nothing more than reprocessed tap water) and charge more than they pay for gasoline. Or consider how Google found a way to sell dictionary nouns — boat, shoe, clock — by charging advertisers zillions to be listed whenever the word is searched.

And now, in the most amazing trick of all, a silver-tongued freshman senator has found a way to sell hope. To get it, you need only give him your vote. Barack Obama is getting millions.

This kind of sale is hardly new. Organized religion has been offering a similar commodity — salvation — for millennia. Which is why the Obama campaign has the feel of a religious revival with, as writer James Wolcott observed, a “salvational fervor” and “idealistic zeal divorced from any particular policy or cause and chariot-driven by pure euphoria.”

“We are the hope of the future,” sayeth Obama. We can “remake this world as it should be.” Believe in me and I shall redeem not just you but your country — nay, we can become “a hymn that will heal this nation, repair this world, and make this time different than all the rest.”

And believe they do

Is it just me, or does Charles Krauthammer remind anyone else of Calibos?

Over in Havana, another communist dictator was surveying U.S. politics and getting dyspeptic. From his sickbed, Cuba's Fidel Castro simultaneously emerged to blast John McCain.

He went ballistic over McCain's life story as a Vietnam-era pilot who fought communists, was taken prisoner and then endured torture from Cuban agents in the shadow of a vast communist takeover of Southeast Asia.

Good find, RP, thanks for putting it up. This gives me another reason to vote for McCain.

OK, so comparing a movement of socialism with a movement of religious revival is totally accurate, right? Because those evil churches just want to f*ck you out of all your money, right? Yep my church screws 3000 people a week so they can sit there and feel all powerful. The pastor beats himself off knowing that he has power over everyone. Please. Krauthammer can go blow it out his ass. Because the stuff that usually comes out the ass is coming out of his mouth.

You've misread the author's point. What he is trying to say is that Obama's followers has lifted him onto a pedestal as a "savior" or "messiah". He pointed out how Obama's message has a religious messianic undertone. Just earlier this week my Current Events professor mentioned this exact same thing about Obama.

Not much different from the Oprah Worshipers, in my never to be humble opinion. Look how all of the silly women have elevated her to "savior" status over the years. The problem is, the real message that both Oprah and Obama use to gain these followers of theirs is based in promoting the victim mentality which says "I need someone else (in this case, the government) to help me."

Dangerous - very dangerous thinking.

I know that was his real point, but I dislike anything that paints the picture that religious figures want to "gain power and control over people." While some individuals fit this description, the vast majority do not (at least as far as Christianity is concerned), and I highly doubt that the pastor of the small church down the street values having control over anyone.

I do agree about Obama's elevated status though. It's sickening and brings out the stupedity in people, but look at it this way: at least people aren't rallying around the Hildabeast like that.

The Bible says there would be false prophets and messiahs who would decieve many people (I would give an example of someone who I feel was one of these but in the fear of offending a certain member who I respect immensely I will not state the name). The antichrist is said to be one of these. I'm not implying that Osama is the antichrist or a false prophet, but he's certainly gathering a following and deceiving people in the same way.

TL, that is an excellent point you made about Oprah pushing the victim mentality. You are most likely absolutely correct. And the same can be said about Hillary's appeal to single women. But this thing with Obama really scares me for some reason.

This is why I have always despised Oprah. She has made her fortune and built an empire on exploiting people - women in particular, who live the victim lifestyle. I once saw a show of hers, which I think was fairly typical of what she regularly does, where some poor woman was sitting on the sofa crying about something that had happened in her life years earlier and how it had ruined her life entirely. She was a perpetual victim. Then Oprah turned to her and said, "Oh honey, we're ALL VICTIMS." The very next camera shot was of the audience where all of the silly women were sitting there nodding their heads in agreement as tears streamed down their long sad faces. I think I yelled something nice like, "Bullshit!" and then turned the channel.

Now here comes Obama (and remember, he's a product backed by Oprah's Harpo Productions) and he's all smooth and poetic as he rambles on about "change" and "hope." Problem is, he also rambles on about victimhood in much the same way Oprah has done (remember, "we're ALL VICTIMS.") So, what is Obama's solution to help the victims - all of us? Is it to inspire people to just get on with life and do for themselves? Is it to inspire people to move on and shed that victim mentality of their pasts? Is it to say: This is America. You can do anything you set your mind to? Nope. B. Hussein - liberal extraordinaire, wants to help the victims (everyone...remember, Oprah says we're ALL victims) by having the government do it all for you.

How many years has Queen Oprah been on the air playing savior? Plenty. How many of her followers have now moved past that victim role? Not too many. I know plenty of women who watch that dumbass show and still wallow in self pity because someone hurt their feelings as a teenager, or because someone broke up with them and hurt their self esteem, or because they were passed over for a promotion, or or or.

It does nobody any good to play the role of victim. And it certainly will do nobody any good to have some ultra left wing bag of wind telling them that it's okay and that it is'nt their fault and that it'll be the government who will be there to save them come January 2009.
