View Full Version : Karma / reputation system?

So, many forums have a "karma" system where users can contribute to the reputations of others.
The ideas is that registered users can add a point to another users reputation when they think that person has contributed something useful. the higher the granters reputation the more points are given to the grantee.
most systems are designed to prevent abuse, i.e. they don't allow for giving negative points (except by admins, and maybe users with high levels of reputation points), and they prevent rep spamming where a user can give another user multiple rep points too quickly.
The benefit is that post-count doesn't mean so much. A lot of people have a high post count but contribute very little to a site, while others may not post often but their posts are of exceptional quality. When a new user comes in they can have a better idea of what a persons reputation is on the forums before they stick their foot in their mouth or something.
On forums I've seen these implemented in the whole community has benefited greatly from the increase in high quality posts, and the decrease of rants and immature posts.

So, you're thinking that this is should be the case here at TAR? I have never read anything here that states that the number of posts means anything. It's just a number and personally, I could'nt care less if someone had a zillion posts or just a couple. It's always nice to see how new people are welcomed and encouraged to post. Personally, I appreciate all of the different people and personality types that are here at TAR.
IHL has been generous here and allows for us to have some serious topics and discussions as well as allowing for posts that are just for fun. Just my opinion here, but it seems to be a nice balance. Not everything has to be a big fight and I'm just guessing that IHL realizes that we are all human beings who sometimes just need a little break from all of the shit that goes on in the world.
Mr. Glass, you will be doing yourself a big favor by chilling out a bit. You worry too much sometimes about things that don't really matter much. C'mon Glass. I can see from many of your posts that somewhere inside of you there is a guy who likes to have a little fun just like the rest of us do. Relax a little. Perhaps a nice cold pina colada, a new Tommy Bahama shirt and a little Don Ho music? :icon_wink
Douglass, my dear, relax. Life is too short to worry about rating people on TAR. Although, I am thinking of posting a photo of myself with the caption: Rate Me / Am I Hot? :icon_lol:

I believe we had it before, and it cause some real problems and IHL did away with it. I was before my time, but I think I read some thread about some time ago.

I actually love those things. They allow people to give feedback on specific posts with little comments attached and such. Really nice for private thanks, or giving someone a "red" for posting something inflammatory. Its private but it lets them know how you feel without starting a war.

I use it to see if i pissed off the right people and who likes what I have to say.
Of course not this forum though. i would want to piss anyone off here. You all pretty much think like I do.

Yea the last red I got was on Gateworld like 8 months ago from someone who made a gross homosexual comment I when I called him on it a bunch of people flamed me and I got redded. Hence why that system isn't always perfect. However it really can be satisfying to see someone give you a "green" for something you've said.

Thats how I know I am doing my job at gateworld. I love stargate and pissing off LIBS and I can do all of that at one stop.
Although this hole site needs one big green. It would be like one big free green forum because I love everything I read. Even the nah's. When someone goes against what you think they do it and explain there selves on why they feel that why so you really can't red them for their honest opinion. After all, this is America and THAT is what makes us so great. Our opinion on the mater and the freedom to say it. Unlike most Dems. I look at them and go, "o' calm on you REALLY can't believe that." Like Clinton coming out and saying that she is bilingual and taht why she talks in many accents.

Exactly. At least on here people explain there own opinions. On Gateworld people just say dumb things and expect everyone to respect it anyway.
Thats whats nice about having a forum where everybody basically knows each other, aka this one :D

Thats funny. I was just showing everyone in the house today your sig. and someone said, "I wonder how much red the person gets for that sig." Thats funny. Now i can tell them. The best part is I found out in another forum. A better one I might add.

I agree with TL. We dont want the libs here to get spammed out and given a bad rep, so when noobs come they think negatively of someone just because they arnt popular here...

True that. Although people here aren't stupid. They are very intellagent. When someone disagrees they explain there self and not in that "I am retarded' way. Although i totally see where you are coming from

TL, it seems there's a misunderstanding....
So, you're thinking that this is should be the case here at TAR?
what "This" should be the case here at TAR? That we should be a well moderated, high quality forum that caters to the users and encourages community? hell yes that;'s what I think TAR should be, and it is, but it could be better... IMHO.
I have never read anything here that states that the number of posts means anything. It's just a number and personally, I could'nt care less if someone had a zillion posts or just a couple.
Glad to know how you feel about the post count, but I think you'll find that most people new to a forum that does NOT have a reputation function will rely at least in part on "post counts" early on while the formulate their own opinions about the people on a site.
you and I know that post counts mean nothing (why are they displayed then?) but a lot of people tend to think high # = better when that's not always the case.
It's always nice to see how new people are welcomed and encouraged to post. Personally, I appreciate all of the different people and personality types that are here at TAR.
I couldn't agree with you more, and that's the great thing about a reputation system. A "new" poster can come in, and in a short time, in very few posts, establish a good reputation that newer users will see and understand that even though this guy only has maybe 10 posts they're all good posts, not rants or off topic gibebrish.
IHL has been generous here and allows for us to have some serious topics and discussions as well as allowing for posts that are just for fun. Just my opinion here, but it seems to be a nice balance.
off topic, but again, I agree with you. A reputation system encourages serious and quality entertianing threads and discourages grief posting and petty arguments.
Not everything has to be a big fight and I'm just guessing that IHL realizes that we are all human beings who sometimes just need a little break from all of the shit that goes on in the world.
...again way off the point... who said anything about a fight? I'd like to see a community driven system that discourages personal/petty attacks.
Mr. Glass, you will be doing yourself a big favor by chilling out a bit. You worry too much sometimes about things that don't really matter much.
Apologies if my willingness and action to contribute a suggestion for the improvement of the TAR forums comes off as some kind of negative action on my part. I don't lose sleep over these forums, I was just thinking about how 90% of the forums I am on have some kind of karma / reputation system implemented and they all seem to have lower incidents of negativity on them. IHL and the mods can only do so much to keep things on topic / decent around here. the beauty of a reputation system is that the community as a whole can judge its membership and when a member sinks below a certain threshold they can be punished automatically.
C'mon Glass. I can see from many of your posts that somewhere inside of you there is a guy who likes to have a little fun just like the rest of us do. Relax a little. Perhaps a nice cold pina colada, a new Tommy Bahama shirt and a little Don Ho music? :icon_wink
I was just thinking I need to get my guns out some time soon... weather has been great lately! And I prefer my tequila just straight Patron Silver with lime, leave the bottle. I don't care about designer clothes....and don't even get me started on Don ho. I knew a few of his kids (he had a LOT of kids counting the illegitimate ones)... to speak ill of the dead I'll leave it at that.
Douglass, my dear, relax. Life is too short to worry about rating people on TAR. Although, I am thinking of posting a photo of myself with the caption: Rate Me / Am I Hot? :icon_lol:
one S, the right way :) And it's not about rating PEOPLE on TAR, it's about rating post quality. I admit it's a thin line.
Anyways, post the pic!

I believe we had it before, and it cause some real problems and IHL did away with it. I was before my time, but I think I read some thread about some time ago.
The early days of "Karma" and similar scripts were a nightmare. The scripts have come a long way in the last couple years. Now you can anonymize who contributes rep, you can limit the amount given out in a day by each user (the higher your rep the more points you can give per cycle), cap min/max limits based on user status (e.g. guest, new member, senior member, mod, admin, owner)
Anyways... it's JUST a suggestion for IHL and the other admins to consider.... it's entirely up to them.

True, although i find myself giving out rep just so I can give rep to someone I want to. I don't know how many times I have been reading a post and thought. That was cool, I will give them some greena dncan't because I did a couple of days ago in another thread.
