View Full Version : Using the Quote option

I've noticed and extreme overuse of the "Quote" feature of the site. It seems that almost every post starts with a quote from a previous post. This is very useful when replying to a specific part of a users post but please refrain from quoting the entire previous post. It just makes the threads terribly long, uses up server space, and makes it very difficult to wade through.

If you want to use the quote feature,

1. Simply hightlight the text that you want in the quote and copy it.
2. Paste it into your reply
3. Highlight the pasted text and click the "quote" icon at the top of the page that looks like a little notepad. This will add Quote tags to that text. To add the "Originally Posted by" option add the =username option as shown in the highlighted section of the attached image.

Thanks.

*Bump*

Let's all try and keep what IHL posted in mind, when replying to someone. It's IHL's site by ownership - but in many ways, it's really the site of all who participate here. Let's try and do what we can to preserve space and do as IHL has asked. Hey, he really doesn't ask a lot of us. He's been entirely generous in keeping the site going for all these years. Let's just remember to try and not quote the whole post that we want to reply to if it isn't necessary. Leave it up to Obama and his big government thugs to waste space.

noticed use of site's " " feature Seems most every post quotes previous post Very useful when replying 2 specifics, Thx

OK. I started including entire quotes after I was accused of changing the blogger's meaning by not including the entire quote.

Even so, as you can see above, I always try to be brief & delete what is not germain. (Don't know why posters think i change the meaning.)

ps, Thx to you for your help over the past year. Thx for putting up ^ with my ( at times ) strange humor.

TAR Pals, I am noticing that the quote feature is really being over-used quite a lot again. If you're just responding to an above post, then just address the member by screen name if you like and respond with your text. If it's a post from a little ways back, then a reply can also be accomplished with a small amount of quoted text from the member you are responding to.

I've got to agree with IHL here that this is just making some of the threads way too long. Especially using a mobile device like a little phone. It just takes forever to get to the meat of the entire thread.

Thanks!

It's a new year and I thoght I'd bump this one more time.

Please ... the threads are getting really long with the lengthy quotes. We are all intelligent enough to understand that you can just post a '^' if you are responding to the above post. Even that is unnesessary in many cases. Please keep the quotes at a minimum as a courtesy to the site.

Let's just have that be a nice New Years resolution here on TheAmericanRight.

I wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Ever try reading this site on your cell phone? It takes forever to scroll through all of the posts because more than half of what you're scrolling through are unnecessary quotes from an above post.

There is absolutly no reason for this to still be going on at the level that it is - NONE. You're responding. We get it. If it's just the above post, use an '^' symbol if you want to. If you're responding to a recent post from a certain member, just mention them by their initials or something. "But TL, what I meant to say was..."

See? It's easy. Think about it as a face to face conversation. You don't repeat back someones words and then respond and then they repeat back your response before they respond, do you? You don't.

Please ... stop with the overuse of this feature. It just looks terrible for the site and it's incredibly frustrating for anyone that wants to read here.

Thanks.

BTW .. if you reply to this post by quoting it, I am going to ban you for an entire day. :icon_mrgr That's how frustrating this has become. If you don't believe me, then just give it a try.

So for those who think this is any sort of easy problem to solve - think again. I ask you to do something - imagine that this is your site, or that you are a moderator here. Then place yourself in the positions of those who have asked nicely for this over-quoting to stop, in order to make the site more readable - and yet were IGNORED. Your polite requests were ignored. And next is for you to be demonized for daring to try and keep things in order - you know .... doing your job.

Last chance has come and gone. Keep it up and your posts will be deleted ... I mean the whole thing - not just the quote from the above post. All of your writing will be gone, and a three day time-out will be implemented.

IHL asked for this courtesy towards the site and our fellow members as far back as 2005. And I've been bumping it over and over.

Enough.

I do want it understood, I usually don't mean to use the quote option. If I am having to do an answer by answer, I mean to use it, but generally, I don't notice when I hit it. My apologies for that. I'll have to be more watchful.
