Here is another one - How Washington, DC got it's name:

It was originally referred to as "the Federal District"...

Congress passed a resolution officially naming it the District of Washington while George Washington was still President, be he was to modest about it and called it just "the District"...

The Columbia part came in because that is the first name the New World was ever called by Europeans...from (obviously) Christopher Columbus.

Over time several things were passed here and there, but combined all the above:
Washington, District of Columbia
