"Tech-savvy militants from al Qaeda and other groups have modified video war games so that U.S. troops play the role of bad guys in running gunfights against heavily armed Islamic radical heroes, Defense Department official and contractors told Congress.

What we have seen is that any video game that comes out ... they'll modify it and change the game for their needs," said Dan Devlin, a Defense Department public diplomacy specialist.

One of the latest video games modified by militants is the popular "Battlefield 2" from leading video game publisher, Electronic Arts Inc of Redwood City, California.

Jeff Brown, a spokesman for Electronic Arts, said enthusiasts often write software modifications, known as "mods," to video games.

Millions of people create mods on games around the world," he said. "We have absolutely no control over them. It's like drawing a mustache on a picture.

Battlefield 2" ordinarily shows U.S. troops engaging forces from China or a united Middle East coalition. But in a modified video trailer posted on Islamic Web sites and shown to lawmakers, the game depicts a man in Arab headdress carrying an automatic weapon into combat with U.S. invaders."

Yea, but Nazi, Soviets, and Terrorist Islamic radicals are actually BAD GUYS! You can't compare them making a game about killing American troops and game killing Nazi troops.

The last time I checked, Nazi troops exterminated 8 million innocent people in a matter of a couple years. When is the last time the American Military did that?

what difference does it make? everybody has a bad guy. I do not like Clinton she is a bad guy to me..But to some of my friends bush is the bad guy. Its all relatative to the culture, person and time. in their culture americans are the bad guys. They ahve their right to make the game and should be allowed.

The only problem I see is that Islamic youth are more impressionable. American kids play games like GTA and it doesn't encourage us to make Malatov cocktails and whip them off roofs at cop cars. But I think in areas like the ME where their opportunities are limited, they might take a game more seriously.

I also think its funny that they make the game anti-American, but yet that same game was shipped right from America. Hippocrits.

But isn't it the enemy killing the Marines? Are you playing the role of the enemy? Or are you the Marine? Last time I checked, that is what you fought as...the Marine..therefore I don't see anything unAmerican about that....

again it goes back to cultural relativism. They are enemies to us not to everyone. Im sure the vietcong thought we were the enemy. Terrorists think we are the enemy and to them we are. Not all cultures think alike and yes sorry it was a bad choice of words to use ethnic group i was typing and thinking fast

Dag, the problem is that there doesn't seem to be much in the way of stopping this...all you need is a copy of a game and BANG, training simulator....at least that's my take. I'm not too familiar with how this stuff works.
The only way I could see it stopping is infringing on the company's rights. The issue isn't about whether terrorists have the right to make these games...the impression I got is that modifying a game and distributing it period is illegal...either way, they're terrorists, they don't give a sh*t about what their rights are, they're going to do it.

modifying a game is not illegal most games welcome the mod becasue it brings in new customers I.E doom, elder scrolls etc... Re-distributing it is illegal beacuse that would be software piracy unlesss the company is involved in the re-distribution and allows it

Hasnt a simliar game like this already been made the game Counter Strike has you to chose the side of Counter Terrorist or Terrorist, I dont know if they clasify the Counter Terrorist as American but you can kill the none Terrorist.

If your dissing counter strike then your blaspheming against life.
Because counter strike is life.

When yo choose Coutner Terrorist or Terrorist you choose on the T side a bunch of fake T groups, out of 4 groups you choose one and thats the skin you use.

For the CTs is navy seals, GSG 9, GIGN and some other group.

Its just a videogame, remember.
