View Full Version : I feel so technologically savy

Windows has been acting up on my computer lately, and I wasn't sure what to do about it. Then one of my students showed me how to use Linux. I've been using it for four days now, and I've never felt more "in the know". And best of all, I don't feel compelled to beat my computer with a large, heavy stick out of fear and frustration. This thing is great! :icon_lol:

Linux is just the way for techies hitting puberty to feel like rebels. Windows is still the best operating system.

Oi, when I first saw the heading for this thread I thought "great, Oi has figured out how to open those child proof bottles of asprian. Now he can teach me". But alas, my day is starting with a tear. Instead of thinking I'll learn something important in my life, you're talking about something I have no clue about. :confused1:

linux is alot more powerful than Windows and it allows you to mold it to work exactly the way you want it to.

Again, Linux isn't any more powerful than Windows, power will always be determined by hardware. A daul core 64 bit processor windows system will always outrun a 1.6 P3 Linux system.
Linux IS extremely customizable, which can be fun.
The biggest problem is that Windows is FAR more used than Linux... this is WHY Windows is far more virus ridden. Internet Explorer is also more virus ridden than FireFox, although Firefox is becoming more and more vulnerable as we speak, but the reason for this is because MORE people use IE, therefore you design malicious code to target the BIGGEST number of people.
If Linux was as widely used as Windows it would be just as messed up by hackers.

linux's bility to be fully customizable makes it that much more powerful then windows. Just like windows XP is more powerful than windows 3.1 or windows ME. Im not to sure about people attacking linux as much though. WIN gts attacked alot bc people just hate microsoft IMHO

All to his technical mumbo jumbo is hurting my technological savvy feeling...you damn kids and your "plug-and-play"s and "dual cores"...sounds like you're speaking in tongues to me!

Oi_Ve, CONGRATULATIONS!!! :clap1: You have reached the next step in human evolution. I have used Linux for many years, and the mere contemplation of Windows sickens me. Linux most certainly is more powerful, and most certainly is more secure. Those two statements are absolutely true, when the system is used correctly. Don't you just love it when your computer does what you tell it to, and nothing more? Don't you also just love it when it just freakin WORKS?! :icon_mrgr
Using Linux is like using a Lamborghini. Just because you can drive your Buick down the lane doesn't mean you can take a Lamborghini around the track at 180! Just the same, just because you can use the Windows control panel does not mena you can use a Linux system effectively. That's why it's important to learn how to use your new system.
Oi, I am overjoyed at your revelation! I will PM you my email address. Should you ever need tech support, please feel free to mail me. Hell, I might even give you my cell phone number! :wink1:
But first, please, for the love of all that is good in the universe, tell me that you are using KDE and not Gnome? Please? lol Also, which distribution are you using?

Windows has plug and play.
plug and play doesn't exist in linux. You have to have drivers for EVERYTHING.
MC, for someone who has supposedly written ground-up drivers, you know little about computer architecture. EVERY thing in your computer, right down to your mouse, no matter what OS, has to have a driver. When you plug a printer into a USB port, Windows may have the driver already on disk, and just installs the driver. The same thing happens on Linux. Linux most certainly does have PnP, and has had it for quite a while, since it was officially introduced in the sysfs virtual filesystem many years ago. You might also read about the proc virtual filesystem.
Another big thing windows has is UI. Linux's UI is pathetic next to windows.
MC, Linux does not have a UI. Linux is the operating system, not the human interface. There are many interfaces that are compatible with Linux. The two most popular are KDE and Gnome. I suspect that you have seen Gnome. Gnome sucks. Gnome is several steps backward. KDE, however, is simple, easy, intuitive, and feels quite a bit like Windows. Give it a shot sometime!
And, another factor is the customization. Yes, linux is easy to customize, but its also got more holes than the average slice of swiss cheese and its as easy to break as it is to customize. In my opinion, its just not worth the hassle.
MC, have you ever heard of reading the manual? Have you ever even tried to customize a Linux system? I doubt it. In fact, I would bet against it. Linux is so heavily modularized (which is a good thing, for those who know nothing about computer architecture) that if you break a service, the system will chug happily along without it. Windows, on the other hand, is not. Try stopping the "workstation" service on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP Pro machine sometime. Watch what happens...

As for me im still using Windows on both of my computers, Linux is good though because it is alot safer than Windows hackers and target big companies such as Windows, not many people use Linux because the only people who uses Linux are nerds so I think it is a safer program to use I don’t like it when I am on Linux it seems like my computer runs smoother, Linux has a good graphics design software. But I’ll just stick to Windows because Linux cant run my computer games.
