I am curious about the record ammount of users below the currently active members. It shows like a hundred and fifty. Whenever I am on this site, there are on average half a dozen people. Such an ammount does not seem realistic. I am wondering if it is a technical error.

I have also wondered about that myself and I thought during set up something went astray and the number is wrong, then I noticed over 120 active users at one time and thought it was a denial of service attack.

I think it is a bug in the program. It could be coming from attacks on the system. I've tried to reset that to zero but it seems that it just jumps up to an unrealistic number again. I'll have to check with the vendors to see what the deal is with that. I don't think it's ever been accurate. The most I have ever seen on the site at one time is about 30 or so.

Like DoubleU says, it could be a network attack on the site. It might not surprise you to know that this site irritates some people. :icon_bigg This might be reflected in this number. If you saw the logs of attempted hacks into the site you'd be amazed. Some are just random scans but others are direct attempts to take it down.

Oh It couldn't be a bunch of liberals attacking this site. It must be one of those nasty nasty people who live in the red states... .After all, aren't the liberals the first ones to protect our right to freedom of speech?

I wonder if the search site 'bots show up as users or not. In my server logs, I can see them browsing my site. MSN has a new search engine out there that's been fairly aggressive in the past several months. I'm thinking about blocking it because I'm tired of looking at their entries in my log.

robots.txt is your friend.

Of course the evil robots ignore it, and hackers don't pay attention.

The word from the tech support guys, when I said that I don't think 163 people were on my site at once was:

No there really were 163 users online, it was google or msn, or yahoo looking over your website, blocking them would make it so people would not be able to find your site by search engines.

So I'm not sure how helpful that number is if it is so easily manipulated and unrealistic but I guess I'll have to live with it for now unless I turn off the option to display it - if there is such an option. http://www.ihateliberals.com/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

i think you should show the logs of attempted attack and sucessful attacks along with ip adresses so we can mess with the people trying to mess with your site. Maybe use the ip adress to find their screen name if possible and send them right wing spam.

The amount of attacks would surprise all but us network admins that are used to seeing such things. There are often hundreds of attempted attacks in just a couple hours. Some are just scans, people looking for open doors and not necessarily directed at this particular site. I'm sure some however are deliberate attempts to take down this site.

I won't post the logs as it won't do much good and will also show some info about this site I don't want to put out there. Don't worry, we are well protected.

How come when I see a name such as your's and mine, I always see numbers attached to it?

Where do you see this? What numbers are you talking about?

Once or twice when I went looking at profiles numbers where in place of names. Once under the Online members it showed numbers.
