View Full Version : Point of the general chat forum?

Ok, IHL and anyone else who cares...

I posted my silly putty post in general chat because it's just that.... general, i.e. apolitical, chat. I was under the impression that this is, aside from being a conservative rant forum, a community.

Despite the random and occasional hostility, I've felt like a part of this community for a while now, and so I just hoping (against hope apparently) that I could discuss something outside the realms of partisan political bickering.

So I ask: When you have divided this forum into so many sub sections nearly to the point of obfuscation, what is the purpose and relivance of a general chat section if general topics are not allowed?

I understand you have no desire to allow outsides to spam your forums with advertising and links to irrelevant or irrevernt websites and I fully agree with that position. I also understand that you do not want people to advertise a commercial product here as a means of marketing a product. No problem with that.

All _I_ was trying to do was to offer some of younger and perhaps more fun loving memebrs of this communtiy to get in on a silly putty pool, no intention to make money here, it's just simple math that I only need 50# of putty for a project and the minimum requirement from Dow Corning is around 100 lbs. If I can offload some excess onto friends then I will make an effort to do so.

As for the seriousness of silly putty... sure it's a hard (rubbery?) subject to take seriously today, but when it was created as a synthetic rubber for WW2 no one was laughing then. This material is, in effect, a tangible product of Americas technological innovation during a war most of us can only read about. (how's that for appealing to a patriotic sentiment?)

So anyways..... back to my original question:

What's the point of a general chat section if the members of this community can't have a general discussion?

What's the poinbt of politics if that's all it is?

Respectfully,

Doug

Let me make a suggestion. Remember that www stand for world wide web. Meaning of course that anyone from eny country that has internet access may read this forum. As it is true in General Chat there are pretty braod subjects as "what do you tink about..." and the poster has a pretty general topic, howver it is a subject that one would see on the headlines such as sports etc.. So before you post you should ask yourself does IHL really want HIS site represented by posting of "who wants silly putty"??

just a suggestion.

Well Mr. Glass your question is valid. Actually, it's one I ask myself on occasion. What's the point?

Just how were you going to distribute this putty? Where people going to post their names and addresses here? That I most certainly won't allow.

I guess the point of general chat is to chat about stuff. Topics. Talk about them. Maybe there are too many forums. Maybe I should just have a forum about politics and politics only. Many of the forums are experiments. So to answer your question, I guess if you want to talk about silly putty, no for it. But I don't want any sort of discussion that would lead to people needing to identify themselves here.

And maybe that little rant of mine was just the final straw in what I saw to be a continuing pattern of obscure post. So I don't know exactly how to give you a good answer to your question. It wasn't meant personally so please don't take it that way. Maybe I was making a point and perhaps I over reacted but I'll still remove topics that I find to be unsuitable.

The truth is that the site might be going under some major changes soon and hopefully they will be for the good. If not, I'll just have to learn from my mistakes.

Personally I agree with him. When I log on here I want to discuss poltics, not silly putty...

You have talked about the game Halo and the XBox, that isn't politics...right?

well I had a great reply typed out and hit the back button and lost it...grrrrr.... I should ALWAYS use notepad....

Anyways... um... this is old news now and I just say whatever. It's IHL's forum and he can do what he wants.

oh and the locked thread has a link to the hotornot website...so....I kinda had to laugh at that :P

oh yeah... I was gonna say about how I'd distributeit....

Of course I would never ask anyone to post their private information in public...I'm as paranoid as you are, no worries there :) BUT... if I want to arange matters off the site through email between concenting adults (or the minors parents) then should that be our perogative? I have no problem sending packages general delevery if need be, so I don't even need a full address if I get the money via paypal or something.... ANYWAYS tho, like I said "whatever" I posted this on a few other forums and the threads took off, so it's like almost gone (well I ahve 25 pounds left)

Anyways IHL, no problem right? case closed? You may as well just delete the thread. I started it, I'm asking. Thanks for the rest of what ya do here :)

You should have just hit the forward button, it would have taken you right back to the post. Besides...use MS Word, not notepad...Word has spell and grammer check (the Google toolbar will spellcheck the text you type in these boxes though...cool stuff).

I use the Google bar. It works fine in IE but the spell check doesn't work worth a shit in FireFox.

That is because FireFox is peanuts to the almighty IE....lol.
