Who will Bush nominate to be chief of the supreme court in wake of Justice Rehnquist's death? I think he will nominate Antonin Scalia, who has been a strong member for 20 years, been firm in his opinions, and interprits the constitution fairly. Your opinions?

What if he appoints O'Conner, would she refuse?

-DougEarth to Mr_Glass, hello? Anyone home? O'Conner resigned. Roberts will be confirmed to replace her.

Technichally, she has not ooficially stepped down until Roberts is sworn in. Wadi is right that she wont come back, but it is possible.

Will she come back? Don't hold your breath. I'm sure she didn't decide to resign on a whim. She offered her resignation, it was accepted, now its a matter of time.

O' Conner coming back is wishful thinking on the Democratic side of the isle. I think Bush will pick a female nominee outside the current Supreme Court. There are a few that have a very conservative record enough to give Ted Kennedy an aneurism. So he could use a little pressure to have the first female Chief Justice (after the loss of the first female Justice) to get another Chief that is just as conservative as Rehnquist. --AAK

Well, Bush nominated John Roberts. I have been an adament supporter of Bush during his presidency, but if Roberts swings left, I will lose it.

I agree I’m a bit nervous on this. I was hoping maybe an Edith Jones or the like. I sure hope he knows something I don’t.

I was hoping he would hold off nominating Rehnquist's replacement until after Roberts confirmation and the second nominee had been selected. I can't see democrats warming to this idea at all. Its bad enough that he's more conservative than suits their fancy, but then to make him the chief, wow.

Isn't that an insult to the other associate justices.
I mean they all have time in on the Supreme bench, whereas Roberts has none.
Kinda like a brand new test pilot allowed to fly the newest prototype. The old guys with more experience would, to borrow a term, have an anuerism.

It definately sends a signal to those who "appear" more conservative that the Commander and Chief doesn't like the liberalism coming from the bench.

It really doesn't matter what the liberals want. They're going to make a big deal over anyone Bush nominates. Bush is a conservative, I would expect him to pick conservative Justices.
I hear the name Clemans, a woman, might take O'Conners place. She is a federal judge from New Orleans. New Orleans, it sure sounds possible at this time.
