A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a Naval conference that included admirals from the U.S., English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies.

At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a group of half dozen or so officers that included personnel from most of the countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks, but a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English.

He then asked: "Why is it we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?"

Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied: "Maybe it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Oh wait he's serious. Maybe it's because the other 4 admirals all have English as their national language.

It's like Wadi said on a different post.

It's a sad day when we have to legislate common sense.

what gives them the right? well, freedom of speech, for one. And they fought the Nazis in ww2. Only for a week, but they fought. The reason they surrendered so quickly was because they hadn't expected an attack from the Ardennes. They had this huge system called the Maginot Line that was built to repel enemy invasion. It was a great idea. the only problem was that the generals didn't expect an attack from the Ardennes area because it was so densly packed with trees. The French resistance lasted throughout the whole war, at least untill the Allies came. They were good soldiers, they only had bad leaders. "Those who can't manage those who can".

I'm glad the French were around during the American Revolution, or else we'd be speaking English right now (well, some of us DO speak English).

Please Rugen, you know as well as I that the reason the US does not have an official language is because the liberals, in all their self-righteous glory, yell RACIST every time a republican proposes such a measure (even if it is to make English the official language of the government.)

Surely we can learn from the problems that having over 100 different languages caused the former USSR and look to the North where every couple of years Quebec contemplates on succeeding from Canada do to language differences. Don't have the time now to do your homework for you now, sorry, maybe another post --AAK

of course thats the U.S.'s official language. and the reason people in european countries learn different languages is because of the size of their countries. there so close together. that and there are alot of different dialects in some countries..like germany
