The department also plans to send two officers to a Spanish-language immersion program in Mexico so they can come back speaking the language and with knowledge about the Mexican culture, which reflects many aspects of other Spanish-speaking nations.

Monroe also said the department will spend $30,000 to purchase language-translation devices called "phrasealators" for officers to use when they encounter a language barrier.

Police here in Richmond are going out of their way to adapt the the illegal immigrants. Obviously, we don't expect them to adapt to us, because, naturally that would be racist.

A man attending the meeting asked Monroe if the police do not report residents to immigration authorities, then why was his brother currently in deportation procedures after an officer ticketed him for not having a license plate on his car. These types of incidents have the community afraid of the police, the man said.

Brother of illegal immigrant (and probably illegal himself) actually has the nerve to play the victim card. HE'S BEING DEPORTED BECAUSE HE'S ILLEGAL, IDIOT! What is it going to take to get this country to take action against the illegal invasion? Obviously, government, business, and law enforcement have to intentions of doing anything about the problem.

Its called cultural diffusion. Its ok to keep your culture and traditions, but you must respect what is set and the norm. If they come here and they want work learn our language, its that simple. I learned 3 languages in my life (spaninsh being one of them) and its not that hard.

Although at first it pissed me off that our officers are being forced to learn Spanish, but then I thought of how they could use this knowledge to ask suspected illegals to show them their "liscense"

Living right across the Va. line I have been following this case closely. After a complete career culminating with the position of chief, I feel I am qualified to speak on issues regarding law enforcement. We have dropped the ball. Dropped it, kicked it into a sewer, and walked away.
I have watched my neighborhood here in Montgomery County, Md. go from a thriving upperclass county to a ghetto. Our County Councilman Doug Duncan is so ambitious for power that he has sold his common sense at every oportunity to purchase the liberal vote. Even the illegal one.
Re: Va.-The mayor wants to move these criminals away from the 7-11 which is located in the forefront of the city, to a designated area. A new building will be built complete with bathrooms and HVAC. ( All at tax payers expense)
The mayor and town police could not figure a way to stop the problem so.... they moved it.
Now they assure the towns folk that if there are still violations after the building has been built, they will vigorously enforce all crimial, and code violations.
Of course the question on my mind is.......why didn't they just enforce the law in the first place?

Good article. Pat Robertson's not totally nuts.

Yep, not a bad article at all...

Maybe he really did get those 66,000 votes in Palm Beach County or whatever.

What the heck does "ally-ally-in-free" mean?

Our Republicans have squandered (or not taken) the opportunities afforded to them... For that, we'll probably wind up in something resembling the good ole' days (pre '94)

For those of us who were children during a time when it was realtively safe for children to play outside after dark, its what you would yell at the end of a hide and seek game when either you couldn't find the rest of those hiding or you mother called you in for bed. As a child though, I yelled "ally ally oxen free".
