If you haven't been there, I guess you just don't know. Many Democrats, especially liberal Democrats, consistently blame America for atrocities around the world while rushing to defend our enemies. I've never understood it and I never will but they do it time and time again. They call Bush a war criminal (http://www.eponymous.org/blog/?p=1830) and a murderer yet they go to great lengths to make sure Saddam Hussein is treated fairly and tenderly and has a steady supply of Doritos (http://www.breakingnews.ie/2005/06/21/story208077.html). They call our soldiers baby killers and compare them to tyrants like Hitler and the Soviet gulags, yet say nothing about civilians being beheaded. They said the events of 9/11 are our fault and many go so far as to imply that we deserved it.
Their latest band wagon is Guantanamo. Nancy Pelosi, Ted Kennedy and Bill Clinton have said it should be shut down. Many liberals say we should release the prisoner there and insist the terrorists held there are mistreated. I guess if you consider three meals a day, being given prayer rugs, and being provide Qurans (at American tax payer expense) being mistreated, they may be right. Meanwhile, these same mistreated prisoners spit and throw feces at our guards (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,124747,00.html) and would kill their own mothers if it served their jihad plan, and our soldiers in the field are given MRE's (http://theepicenter.com/mre_military_meal_ready_to_eat.html). The terrorists at G'itmo are so mistreated, many of them are gaining weight while in custody (http://slate.msn.com/id/2083612/). Do you remember seeing images of our soldiers returning from prison camps? Ever see any of them coming out in better physical condition than when they entered?
Dick Durbin's comments comparing our military and prisons to Soviet gulags forced him to apologize. He didn't actually say he was sorry for condemning our troops, he said he was sorry if his words offended anyone. I guess to liberals, that's an apology. Durbin has never been to Guantanamo. Some Democrats however, have been to G'itmo (http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20050628-121155-4623r.htm). Sen. Ron Wyden, Democrat for Oregon and Sen. Ben Nelson, Democrat from Nebraska recently toured the facility. How do Sen. Nelson's impressions of G'itmo compare to Dick Durbins comments? "Everything we heard about operations there in the past, we'd have to say, was negative. What we saw firsthand was something different," Mr. Nelson said. And remember, Nelson was there - Durbin was not.
The 'blame America first' crowd will never go away. It's a liberal commandment. But it is a bit refreshing to see some Democrats rise above the rhetoric and give an honest account of what they see.
