On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved a bill that would give the Attorney General the right to shut down websites with a court order if copyright infringement is deemed “central to the activity” of the site — regardless if the website has actually committed a crime. The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) is among the most draconian laws ever considered to combat digital piracy, and contains what some have called the “nuclear option,” which would essentially allow the Attorney General to turn suspected websites “off.” Story (http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/11/coica-web-censorship-bill/)

Story (http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/11/coica-web-censorship-bill/)Wow! If it sailed through unanimously, then that means that all these guys agreed to it; they sit on the Judiciary committee:
Jeff Sessions
Ranking Member, R-Alabama
Orrin G. Hatch
R-Utah
Chuck Grassley
R-Iowa
Jon Kyl
R-Arizona
Lindsey Graham
R-South Carolina
John Cornyn
R-Texas
Tom Coburn
R-Oklahoma
Ok, Senators Grassley, Graham, and maybe Hatch, I can understand. But Senators Coburn, Kyle and Sessions? There must be more to this story than what's written.
What's the other side of the story, I wonder?

Without delving into this more, I agree with them. Stealing copyrighted material, whether on the internet or not, is still theft. The ruling says "central to the activity" of the site." If the main purpose of the site is stealing other persons property they should be shut down.

ca, their is probably no back story...and this is as dracionian and bad as it sounds-
The republicans have been just as eager to globalize us and take the rights the DEMOCRATS have been- God forbid the truth get out-
Auri net nuetrsality is giving the little man the chance as a corporation to make it, and as much coverage (if they put the work in to be seen, like websites)- but search engines and how they list have been working on overturning that concept for years

As I suspected what this was REALLY all about.
Virtually every single blog in the world will break this law every time they excerpt a story that is copyrighted. Which is pretty much every news article. If you excerpt something I write, you’re breaking copyright law. Not that I would bother, mind you, but, I could have your domain shut down if I complained to the DOJ (then they’d shut me down for all the excerpts). Hot Air? Toast. Michelle Malkin? Gone. Ace of Spade. Bye Bye. Huffington Post? Daily Kos? Screw them. Democratic Underground? See ya. This could be done through one of the two lists, the first which would shut your domain name down (people could still get there by the website number, which should make it easy for Joe Biden.) The second method would have the DOJ encouraging providers to shut off access, despite Fair Use law.
I'm very suspicious of what comes out of DC anymore. They try and sell these bills as a "good cause" yet the "devils" in the details have a totally different purpose in mind.
I'm so fed up with the back door crap that goes on.
and so it begins

I never could figure out what net neutrality was all about and why in my gut I didn't like it....:icon_mad:
