CHARLESTON, S.C. - An off-duty police officer on a Sunday drive in his police cruiser saw something awfully familiar - his recently stolen Volkswagen Jetta.
After passing his car on Limehouse Bridge shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday, North Charleston patrolman Ethan Bernardi whipped his cruiser around and pulled over the stolen vehicle. He called other deputies, who took possession of the car and arrested three suspects, Charleston County Sheriff's Capt. Dana Valentine said.
Investigators don't know how the suspects got the car, which was recently stolen from Bernardi's Johns Island home.
"One of the advantages to having off-duty police officers using their patrol cars while off-duty is that they are able to respond to crimes when needed," said North Charleston Police Chief Jon Zumalt.
Driver Vicki K. Grooms, 42, of Johns Island, and passengers David R. Pritchard, 33, of West Ashley and James H. Brisbane, 49, of Wadmalaw Island, have been charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.
