DALLAS — A proposed solution to a lack of communication between English-speaking school principals and Spanish-speaking parents has a lot of people talking in Texas.
Some Hispanic Dallas moms say they're often in the dark about how their children are performing in school because they don't know English, and the principal doesn't know Spanish. A new proposal before the school board would force principals to learn the native language of the majority of students — for 43 percent of pupils at Dallas schools that language is Spanish.
Critics argue the plan is a threat to the official language of America. The Dallas Council of PTAs says the solution shouldn’t be forcing principals to learn Spanish, but instead making the parents learn English.
"English should play a big role. This is America. And when in the history of this country, when people have come to this great nation, they have had to learn the English language," said Harry Trujillo of the Dallas Council of PTAs (search).
Supporters say the plan, which is the brainchild of a Dallas schools trustee, can help children get a better education and make communication with parents more effective.
Count, what does your wife think of this?

why is it the principles responsibility to learn a foreign language? Maybe those hispanics should move their children to a different school. It does not seem fair that the principle should have to change because of some foreigners not knowing the primary language in the country which they live in. WTF. Something has to be done with many of the language barriers and i dont believe that that something is higher spanish teaching in schools. Maybe any immigrant should HAVE to learn English instead.

And when we teach them English we'll teach them how to spell "principal" and how to use English properly.
The answer is to provide more training to the parents of immigrants so they can learn English. As the husband of a teacher who worked in schools where the parents spoke little or no English I can say that a major snag in educating these children is getting their parents involved in their education. It can be either laziness or a lack of time (immigrants have to work much longer hours to earn the money you and I make in a day).

I'm really beginning to dislike immigrants.

That's b/c good paying jobs go to people that can communicate to the masses (english) and have some education.

The only "socialist handout" that I'm aware of that gets widely used by hispanic immigrants is the use of county hospitals as their doctors because their jobs have no insurance, and many Americans use that same "handout".

I can counter this with personal experience. I used to work for the health department, and I traveled to dozens of health clinics. The vast majority of people in line waiting for handouts were hispanics. Not some, not alot, but MOST of the recipients were Mexicans and/or Hispanic, and based on analysis of statistical data, I can only assume that most of them are illegals. Not undocumented, not migrant workers, not economic refugess. They are illegal.
And I don't care much for Americans that receive those handouts either. Count, you can't seem to end any one of your posts without some kind of slam on America or Americans. You just have to squeeze it in. It's really getting old. You've written so many things sympathetic to illegals, but not one post comes to mind of yours that is sympathetic to Americans.

I hate to keep beating this dead horse but, again, it is not our responsiblity to give them anything. If they want to be here bad enough, they can learn the damn language on their own, or they can sneak their asses back down to May He Co.
